Atari 5200 For Sale

The Atari 5200 Super System arrived on the gaming market in 1982 as a replacement for the Atari 2600 console, the 5200 didn't sell as well as the 2600 or its successor the 7800. The 5200 sports 4 game controller ports and  requires a adapter to play the older 2600 games. If your just looking to buy an old Atari to play games on I would recommend you look into the 7800.

Are you looking for Atari 2600 Games? Or perhaps Atari 5200 Controllers?

Atari 5200 notes:

-The 5200 was created to compete with the Intellivision.
-As a prototype the Atari 5200 was codenamed Pam. After an Atari Inc. employee.
-The Atari 5200 is a big and heavy console so keep that in mind when buying one.
-The stand 5200 controllers can be prone to failure, look for auctions that state the system has been tested and the controllers work.
-The 5200's with 4 ports have a different way to plug them to the the TV and power, the two port systems were released to fix some design issues.

5200 4 port veruses the 2 port version

When the Atari 5200 was released in 1982, it was the 4 port that hit store shelves. Having four ports on a game console was uncommon at the time.

The main difference is the switchbox that connected the AC power to the Atari 5200.  If you're planning on buying a 4 controller port 5200 make sure it has its switchbox included. They tend to get lost over the years as most extra parts tend to be. Otherwise you'll have to find a switchbox to buy, build or hack your new 5200 to be able to directly plug the AC brick into it.

5200 Four Port Switchbox

This is what the 4 port switch box looks like. I'm not sure what Atari was thinking on this one, less cords to deal with i guess. Atari must of thought better of it because it dropped this switchbox from the 5200 and released it with two controller ports.

One thing you have to ask your self when deciding between the two is how often do you need four controller ports period? I for one do not know 3 people personally that I can get to sit down and fire up most old systems; let alone a Atari 5200! Everyone wants to play the 2600.

If you're a casual collector I would suggest finding a 2 port Atari 5200 first. If your dead set on a 4 port you can always buy one later; they are both common enough to find without too much work.
